Global Swarming: Reflection and Exploration of Colony Collapse Disorder
10 am to 5 pm
Texas Discovery Gardens at 3601 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Dallas, Texas 75210
One in every three bites of food is dependant upon the pollination of crops. Where would we be without pollinators in our natural world? How would this affect food production? What are the environmental, social and economic impacts of this?
Colony Collapse Disorder is a phenomenon affecting honeybees. There is a perfect storm created by pesticides, introduced pathogens, viruses and perhaps GMO foods. Research is ongoing in this critical area.
To illuminate this plight, Texas WAX/Dallas has created a group show called Global Swarming. The common factor we have in our creative process is the use of Encaustic Wax.
Encaustic is a painting medium in which the binder for the pigment is beeswax or wax andresin. Examples of encaustic tomb portraits from Roman Egypt bear witness to the durability of the medium, which is thought to have been widely used in ancient times. The technique was briefly revived in the 19th century and is now used by contemporary artists.
We feel powerful communication can be shared through the visual experience.

It all culminates January 9, 2010, with our “Come to the Tropics” mass tropical butterfly release at 10:30 am. Release a butterfly into the conservatory for $15 (this includes butterfly house admission) and enjoy a guided tour at 11 am, music, and fun family activities all day long.
There's no need to reserve a spot, but tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10 am. Stay tuned for more details!
