Modern Victory Gardens: a Vegetable Garden Educational Series at Texas Discovery Gardens

More: Victory Gardens are alive and well in Dallas. Learn how to maintain yours or create your own with this popular community and backyard garden educational series. The last class sold out, so be sure to register early.
The March class will focus on preparation for planting, when and what to plant, planting techniques, feeding and fertilizing, companion planting, and integrated pest control.
At noon, participants can bring a sack lunch to Lake Highlands Community Garden and enjoy a picnic and meet and greet. This is a great opportunity to see fellow community gardeners and swap gardening tips and stories.  It’s a great chance to see a thriving community garden in action.
The Lake Highlands Community Garden is located on City-owned property behind the old armory building located near the intersection of Goforth and White Rock Trail (7901 Goforth Rd. Dallas, TX 75238).
Note: Wear appropriate clothing for an outdoors class.
Cost: $25 per class. Become a Garden Member and save $5 each class!

Randy Johnson, horticulturist for Texas Discovery Gardens, enjoys trying different vegetable crops in the Gardens. His specialties are native plants of Texas and organic gardening.
Mike Merchant, Ph.D., BCE, is a professor and Extension Urban Entomologist with
Texas A&M University Research and Extension Center. Dr. Merchant serves as co-director of the Southwestern Technical Resource Center for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Schools and Daycare Facilities. He is a Board Certified Entomologist and, as BCE Director, helped originate the new Associate Certified Entomologist program with the Entomological Society of America.
A.L. Nickerson, a local supporter of community gardens, started the first community garden in Lake Highlands in April 2008.

Brian Weinberg, Director of Recycle to Eradicate Poverty, is an avid world traveler, aspiring runner, and guru for innovative ideas ranging from creative capitalism (or social entrepreneurship) to microfinance.  He is dedicated to environmental and poverty-related issues, founding Recycle to Eradicate Poverty; a program of The Chiapas Project that recycles cell phones to fund microfinance loans to the poor.  Their latest project is to beat the One Million Cell Phone Challenge; recycling one million cell phones to save 350 trillion gallons of water from potential pollution and help 100 thousand people rise out of poverty through microfinance.  Anyone in the US is encouraged to participate by requesting free pre-paid mailers at the Turn Phones into Loans web site.

Roadmap to Planning and Planting Trees: News Conference and Announcement

The Texas Trees Foundation and NCDC Imaging & Mapping will unveil the Roadmap to Planning and Planting with Trees, a national mapping model that prioritizes tree planting sites using GIS and remote sensing technologies and environmental factors.  This exciting and informative meeting will highlight the Roadmap project and how it can be used as a tree planting tool in the City of Dallas and beyond.

Join millions of people around the world in taking a stand against climate change! It’s simple: turn out your lights for one hour, Earth Hour, beginning at 8:30pm.
Dallas residents throughout the city are encouraged to turn off their lights for the event. The central focus of Dallas’ Earth Hour celebration will be the downtown area – watch the famous Dallas skyline dim.  
Many “watch parties” are being planned in Uptown, Deep Ellum and Oak Cliff including events at the Belmont Hotel and West Village to watch the Dallas skyline turn off its lights. For updated information on Earth Hour events, continue to check the official Dallas page of the Earth Hour web site.
