“Native Dave” and Christy Ilfrey will present “Sustainable Landscapes for North Central Texas”, a program about designing and implementing a landscape that, once established, thrives on ambient rainfall with only supplemental irrigation, reduces maintenance tasks, and reflects local natural beauty.  David – a 7th-generation Texan – completed the prestigious Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener training program and earned the BS in environmental studies at Texas State University at San Marcos.  Christy (a transplant!) completed the BA in English from the same university.  She is a writer and professional speaker.  Their mission is to inspire positive changes in their community by way of design and consultation services, writing projects and speaking engagements.  Although "rebellious by Nature", the Ilfreys have received several awards and accolades for their commitment to conserve, preserve, restore and celebrate Texas' natural resources

2008 Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday
If you’re thinking about doing a bit of home remodeling or possibly purchasing an appliance, the 2008 Energy Star sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2008 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 26, 2008, also known as Memorial Day Weekend.  During this time, Texas shoppers will not have to pay state and local sales and use tax on purchases of certain energy efficient products.
The products qualifying for exemption are:

  1. Air conditioners priced under $6,000 (room and central units)
  2. clothes washers (but not clothes dryers)
  3. ceiling fans
  4. dehumidifiers
  5. dishwashers
  6. light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)
  7. programmable thermostats
  8. refrigerators priced under $2,000

The products must display the Energy Star logo on the packaging or the Energy Guide label. There is no limit on the number of items that may be purchased and an exemption certificate is not required.
The tax-free holiday also applies to Internet and catalog sales of eligible products, layaway sales of eligible products, delivery, shipping, handling or transportation charges connected to the sale of the qualifying item, and charges for installation of qualifying items.

The children’s area will be blooming with activity featuring train rides, face painting and a balloon artist.
Planting and cultivating information will be available from local plant societies, including the Dallas Rose Society and the Bonsai Society of Dallas.  Also on hand to prick your curiosity is the Kactus Korral selling cacti and other succulent plants. Ikebana International will demonstrate the art of Japanese flower arrangement while the Dallas Society of Master Gardeners will be there to teach you to be the master of your own garden.
Guest speaker Joe Lamp’l, author of the recently released The Green Gardener’s Guide: simple, significant actions to protect and preserve the planet, will make two presentations to help gardeners take a ‘greener approach’ to their gardening activities.  He also will sell and sign copies of his book.  Joe Lamp’l is host of Garden SMART on PBS and Fresh from the Garden on Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Network.
